Art Walk and Music Fest, Maplewood NJ

Sunday, September 30th was a beautiful sunny day in my hometown of Maplewood. The weather was perfect for the art and music festival located on Maplewood Avenue and its side streets. This was the seventh year of the event and the first time I participated. It was really well run and I found the set up and breakdown to be easy and stress-free. A good friend lent me a high quality 10' x10' tent, I borrowed 2 six foot tables from my job and I was good to go. Rather than bother with heavy walls and/or hanging lots of things from the tent itself, I purchased a dozen tabletop easels which were easy to set up and surprisingly well made.

The weather was perfect and there were lots of families (and lots of dogs!) milling around. I was able to sneak away from my "booth" to quickly look at the other art on display and I met a few of the other artists/vendors. My wonderful husband kept me company the entire day and of course helped with the set up and break down. I couldn't have done it without him and owe him a huge THANK YOU! Also, a huge thank you to my friends who stopped by to support me. All in all, it was a wonderful day and I am happy to say that I sold several paintings as well as giclee prints, greeting cards, dishtowels, embroideries, and pillows all made from my original paintings.

Here are some photos of my two tables at the Art Walk. I also brought along a beautiful antique folding sleigh chair to display a pillow I made with my self-designed fabric and an antique towel holder to display my dishcloths and napkins.

Above are some of my newest designs. I made a drawing of notable buildings and structures in Maplewood and turned the drawing into a toile design fabric. From that I made dishtowels, pillows, and a few embroidery hoop hangings (top 4 photos). I used a floral painting to make cotton/linen fabric from which I sewed dinner napkins (center, left). I painted a few watercolor scenes of Maplewood buildings (center, right) from which I also made giclee prints and greeting cards. The bottom row shows two of my recent monotypes with watercolor, both of which sold at the Art Walk. The fellow on the left is derived from a NY Public Library digital archive drawing. The toad on the right is traced from a photo I took in Cape May and the flowers are from the NYPL digital archive.
